Update on Upper-Year Residence and Residence Soph Applications

April 6, 2021

While Western is planning for more face-to-face instruction this fall, the unpredictability presented by COVID-19 means we may need to continue our residence de-densification strategy.

As such, in order to honour our residence guarantee to the incoming first-year class, we are unable to accept upper-year residence applications at this time and cannot offer accommodations to live-in residence sophs this fall. Of late, with active outbreaks in some residence buildings driven by variants of concern, our fall occupancy strategy must prioritize the health and safety of our residence community.

We understand this news will be disappointing for some. We had hoped to have a clearer picture of our fall occupancy strategy by now, but uncertainty associated with the variants of concern and the rollout of vaccines has added a level of complexity to our planning.

We strongly advise upper-year students to consider alternative housing options for the fall, such as renting off-campus.

Our Off-Campus Housing website hosts more than 5,000 listings annually, where you can search available rentals in London. Please consider booking an appointment to speak with a member of our Off-Campus Housing team who can help answer your questions related to living off-campus.

Recognizing the vital role Residence Sophs play in supporting first-year students, we are fully committed to operating a residence orientation program in which Residence Sophs live off-campus and still provide peer mentorship, academic support, and lead residence orientation week activities. A change in address does not mean a change in support to our first-year students.

Applications for Residence Head Soph positions will open tomorrow (Wednesday April 7). Residence Soph applications will open in early May with all interviews being conducted remotely after exam season.
