A Guide to Bike Protection and Sustainability for Residence Students

Whether you're pedaling to class or cruising along the Thames Valley Parkway, your bike is more than just a ride. At Western University, cycling isn’t just about convenience; it’s about protecting your property and the planet.

Why Bikes Matter for Sustainability

Did you know that personal vehicles are the #1 source of emissions in London, Ontario? Choosing to cycle instead of drive is one of the most impactful ways students can reduce their carbon footprint. Western’s campus is designed to support this shift, with scenic bike routes, secure parking options, and a growing network of safe cycling infrastructure.

By biking, you're:

  • Cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions
  • Supporting cleaner air and quieter streets
  • Improving your physical and mental health
  • Contributing to a more sustainable campus culture

Western’s Open Space Strategy even includes a “Big Move” to complete the campus bicycle network—so every ride you take helps push that vision forward.

Protect Your Ride

Sustainability only works if your bike sticks around. That’s where bike protection comes in. Western Special Constable Service (WSCS) and London Police Service have partnered to bring the 529 Garage program to campus—a powerful tool to deter theft and recover stolen bikes.

Here’s how to protect your bike:

These secure parking options are free but require a permit. Review more information:

If You Witness a Theft—Report, Don’t React

If you see someone stealing a bike, do not intervene. Your safety is the priority. Instead, immediately contact the Western Special Constable Service: 519-661-3300. Quick reporting helps keep our campus safe and discourages future thefts.

Ride Smart, Live Green

Cycling is fun, healthy, and environmentally responsible. Share tips with your residence community members, encourage bike registration, and explore the beautiful Thames Valley Parkway that connects campus to the city. Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or just getting started, every ride makes a difference.

Let’s build a campus where bikes are safe, students are informed, and sustainability is second nature.
